Day 1: Travelling to the South Devon coast
Plan your journey to South Devon depending on what sort of a journey you’d like. Perhaps you’d like to get there as quickly as possible on the motorway or maybe you’d like a more leisurely drive down A and B roads going through towns and cities you’d like to visit or maybe via a National Trust property or just through some beautiful English countryside. If your journey is going to be a long one, you might want to book ahead and set up your camper van at a campsite or designated parking area for overnight stays, and then continue in the morning.
Day 2: Arriving in Dartmouth, South Devon
Begin your exploration of this amazing area of England by heading to Dartmouth, an extremely picturesque town on the banks of the River Dart. Visit Dartmouth Castle for its historical significance and enjoy beautiful views from the ramparts across to Kingswear Castle on the opposite bank of the River Dart Estuary. There are many campsites in the area due to its popularity with tourists, but it would be wise to book in advance to ensure you find the best spot for your campervan.
Day 3: Dartmoor National Park
Drive a short distance inland to explore Dartmoor National Park. Hike to the iconic Haytor Rocks, spot the famous wild Dartmoor ponies or simply enjoy the rugged beauty of the moorland. There are also many opportunities for wild camping in designated areas if that’s your preference. It would be easy to lose an entire week exploring beautiful Dartmoor in your campervan, but there is so much more to see on the South Devon coast.
Day 4: Totnes and Kingsbridge
Take the campervan to the town of Totnes, known for its bohemian atmosphere and unique shops. In recent times Totnes has gained something of a reputation as a centre for learning, the arts and alternative, unconventional lifestyles. The residents are extraordinarily pleasant and friendly, many will happily stop and chat with visitors, and all seem incredibly proud of their amazing town. Afterward, drive to Kingsbridge and explore the estuary in this area of outstanding natural beauty. The historic architecture of the town is as breathtaking as the views. You can also visit nearby Salcombe for its stunning beaches, where you could almost believe you’re holidaying in the Mediterranean. Salcombe is also the location of Overbeck’s Garden, owned by the National Trust, featuring a tropical garden situated by the cliffs and with an amazing Edwardian house and grounds to explore.
Day 5: South Hams Coast
No trip to the South Devon coast in a campervan would be complete without spending a day exploring the South Hams coastline, known for its wonderful, golden sandy beaches and villages bursting with colour and charm. Be sure to visit Bantham Beach and Bigbury-on-Sea, where you can walk across the sandbar to Burgh Island at low tide.
Day 6: Plymouth
Next up, exploring Plymouth, a historic naval city which is also home to the National Marine Aquarium. Visit the Royal William Yard, Plymouth Hoe, and the Mayflower Steps, which are of great historical significance. The city’s Devonport Dockyard is the most extensive Naval base in Western Europe. Whilst in the area, you should also pop into Cotehele, a medieval house in Calstock, just North of Plymouth. It is owned by the National Trust and is one of their most popular sites due to its extraordinary appeal.
Day 7: The Rame Head Heritage Coast
Head to the Rame Head heritage coast and walk along some of Southern Englands most wild, unspoilt and naturally beautiful coastline. Walk out to Queen Adelaide’s Grotto and enjoy the beatiful views of the English Channel. Drive your campervan West along the coast and explore the town of Looe, famous for providing 20 ships for the siege of Calais in 1347! You’re also very close to the Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary, a wildly interesting place!
